My Top 10 Recommendations for at-home Beginner Workout Gear

Updated: Aug 2, 2021

Mondays are all about FRESH STARTS and MAKING MOVES!! So, why not make some moves this week towards starting a new plan towards a healthier lifestyle?! For those of you that are just starting out and feel the inevitable weight(pun intended) of "Where do I even Start"?.... this post is Just what you need.

Here is a list of My Top 10 Go-To-Gadgets and tools to get you started on that journey...

  1. Resistance Bands: There is an overwhelming about of options out there for bands on the market. My rule of thumb is to look for things that will be multi-functional, especially when building an At- Home workout space. The Olarhike Resistance Band kit with handles and door anchor comes with 5 levels of weight resistance that will be sure to challenge you from start to finish.

1b. Booty Bands!! Great for adding an upgrade to your squat session. This set is great with 5 different levels of resistance and small enough to chuck into your overnight bag and get your workouts in no matter where you are in life!

2. Kettle Bells: Talk about a great addition to any home gym no matter your level of expertise.

3. Foam Roller: Recovery is key. This is a great tool for your toolbox when it comes to recovery basics. I am a big fan of this brand roller in particular, but there are great options out there to choose from.

4. Yoga Mat: I don't really need to say too much about this one, lol! It's pretty Simple Simon. Its great to have a comfy spot to get your sweat on.

5. Water Bottle/Insulated Flask: Hydration is one of the most important and most neglected parts of daily living. Grab an insulated flask to keep your fluids/hydration optimal.

6. Dumbbells: No need to run out and buy a massive DB set for thousands of dollars(yes, thousands$$$). Especially as a beginner, focusing on form is paramount. Here's a very basic set to get things started.

7. Wireless Headphones/Speaker: Music motivates us, Plain and Simple!!! I prefer something portable and I especially like a speaker that I can bring outside with me so I can workout in my yard or the lake while the kids play with their buddies.

8. Slam Ball: For me, this is a MUST HAVE!! For many reasons this is one of my fave tools for at-home workouts. Not only is it great for a full body sweat feast, but talk about getting your aggression out!!!

9. Protein Powder: Ok, this is an important one. Unfortunately, most people don't get enough protein in their daily diets. Supplementing with a Plant based or Isolate Whey protein post workout will help aid in recovery and growth. Now, not all proteins are made the same so be sure to read your labels. My tip is to stay away from anything with too many ingredients. We will get into proteins in a later post.

When I'm looking for a protein the first thing I do is read the ingredients label. Your protein shouldn't have 500 ingredients in it. It should have 3 things: Protein, EAAs(essential Amino Acids), and a natural sweetener. Any more than that and you might as well drink an Ice Cream Milkshake! Now, That's not to say there aren't good proteins out there with more than 3 ingredients, but anything extra in my opinion outside of some fiber or a pro/prebiotics starts to become excessive.

10. Athletic Footwear: There are tons of shoes to choose from and depending on your activity, you may have multiple pairs for different things. Here is a great running shoe as well as my fave sneaker for lifting and any sort of functional training .

These are just a few key things that I would suggest for any beginner looking to start a fitness routine. I would also recommend downloading a tracking app such as MyFitnessPal to track your meals and activity. Having a visual of your progress is important, especially when starting out and can help to keep you accountable.
